Book DescriptionSet in the late 60s the stories attempt to describe problems encountered by a handful of marginal men of color with personal and social issues who find themselves on an elusive quest for a "better life" in two culturally different environments: London, England, and Stockholm, Sweden. The main characters are few and most of them are from Guyana, a former British colony situated on the mainland of South America. The other main characters are from the English-speaking Caribbean island of Trinidad (& Tobago). There is an Afro-American and a West African from Gambian .
The first tale is about loneliness, lovelessness, disappointment and despair in the life of Mr. Charlie Cheddar in London. However, a recently acquired friend Julian has promised to introduce him to Helen, believing that a love relationship would change his life to one of positivity. And so he is hopeful that the day´s event would restore happiness and joy in his life.
The second story is about a young woman Betty (Scottish) and her act of humility that leads to a dispute with her much older boyfriend, David (Trinidadian). The dispute is about an abandoned puppy in need of shelter, but it also sheds light on their personality and love relationship, Betty eventually finds herself in an uncompromising position. One way or another she must find a way to settle the dispute.
The third tale is a novelette that depicts unrequited love and friendship between a young Guyanese man Binky and a young Swedish woman Linda. They first met in London, and friendship, with mild romantic moments, developed, dating regularly and cuddling before parting. After Linda´s return to Sweden Binky was invited there for a holiday. Being of a romantic disposition, he has hopes of obtaining her love.
The final story is also a novella, about social and personal problems in the lives of a handful of marginal men of color, with social and personal problems in the Scandinavian city of Stockholm. The characters (Guyanese, Trinidadian) are more or less in an elusive search for a better way of life - with the exception of the Afro-American.
There is also humor, joy, disappointment, despair, sadness. Perhaps a glimmer of hope.
