Book Description

It’s 1967, and Peverell Wood is something of an anachronism. Whilst the youth of the day were becoming enthralled with flower power and the permissive society, 23 year old Peverell felt more at home with his suit and tie, his battered old Wolseley 6/90, and his passion for the works of Agatha Christie. The latter had inspired him to set up business as a private detective in Durham.

Thankfully, he has a private income, as the residents of the county seem to have neither the inclination nor the money to employ his services.
One night, when returning from London by train, a mysterious fireball rips through the carriage, and he is the only survivor. But was this an accident or arson?

Having survived the mishap, Peverell takes on a missing person case in the Northumberland village of Eley: an insular society, wary of outsiders – especially a well to do southerner like Peverell.

Not surprisingly, his inquiries appear frustratingly unsuccessful, but they do seem to provide the catalyst for murder. Suddenly it seems as though something dark is afoot in Eley; but can Peverell find out what and bring a killer to justice?
