In 1981 Nick was sent alone to be a volunteer English teacher at a Girls’ Boarding School in a small desert town in Sudan. He found himself in a place where the traditions and customs of Saharan life had remained almost unchanged for generations. In an elegiac, but also humorous way he describes the rhythms and vagaries of what is now already a largely lost world. He gets to know his inquisitive, funny and emotional students, who develop an unexpected passion for Jane Austen. Like Austen’s heroines, making the right marriage will also be the most important event of their lives.

Nick also takes us to ancient Sudanese cities and to neighbouring countries at a time of regional conflict, He is in Sudan during a brief pause in a long civil war. During an adventurous visit to the south he travels with dancing Dinka warriors. Egypt is in crisis after the assassination of President Sadat and he finds himself alone in the Valley of The Kings. Later he becomes one of the few foreigners in years to climb the Mountains of The Moon in war torn Uganda.
