Though her parents can order her to go to this man, they cannot make her be a good wife. If she can prove quite a disappointment to her husband-to-be, Walter Taylor, he might decide to send her back home, and her parents would have to take her back in.

When Sophie meets Walter at the station, she is ready to put her plan into action. He already seems to believe she cannot handle the farm, and so it should be easy to convince him that he is correct. The preacher is out of town, so she has only a few weeks to prove her unworthiness as a wife. But as she puts her plan into play, Sophie begins to have doubts. Could it be she has begun to have feelings for this man, who seems unshaken by her lack of cleaning skills and bad cooking?
