It begins when Alex Cave, an ex-CIA operative turned geophysicist instructor, is on vacation sailing the waters of the Puget Sound and hears a Mayday call. He sees a brilliant flash of light surround an oil tanker and changes course to help and discovers there was no explosion, no one on board, and the oil has mysteriously vanished without a trace. His friend, the Director of National Security, asks him to find out how the oil disappeared and his only clue is a three-inch crystal found in the empty hold of the tanker.

When thousands of square miles of Arctic Ocean freeze in a matter of minutes, Alex is called in to investigate, and joins his best friend, Okawna, on the high-tech research vessel named Mystic, but some of the crew have their own plan, which doesn’t include them. Alien technology is discovered, stolen, and taken to COBRA, a private top-secret research facility south of Yellowstone National Park. The scientist in charge has no idea what she’s dealing with, and things go horribly wrong.
