Book Description

The years following the end of the Qing dynasty were some of the most turbulent in Chinese history. With the abdication in 1912 of Pu Yi, the last emperor of China, history saw the end of 2,000 of Imperial rule in China and the start of a new era which would prove to be more dramatic and uncertain than anything that had preceded it.

This book follows the life of Pu Yi from his accession to the throne at the age of two, through to his new life in Communist China after the Chinese revolution which swept away the Imperial system and changed China forever.

As you follow Pu Yi's life you will uncover intrigue, plots, and political assassinations within the walls of the Imperial palace. You will be introduced to a fascinating cast of characters, each scheming to maintain power in the deadly world of Chinese politics. Two of the most intriguing players are the Dowager Empress Cixi, who imprisoned her own nephew and led the empire as it disintegrated around her, the opium addicted Empress Wan Rong, who fought with Pu Yi's other wives, and ultimately ended her days in a Russian prison.

You will learn how the dramatic events of the Second World War in China, and Pu Yi's brief return to power as ruler of Manchukuo were engineered by the beautiful and deadly Eastern Jewel. A Japanese spy who used her relationships with those in positions of power to aid the Japanese fight against the Chinese war effort.

Finally, you will see Pu Yi, the last Chinese emperor, as a private citizen, finding his place in the new Communist China, where without wealth and rank he found a new, more domestic role in his final years, before the Cultural revolution, and politics, intervened once again.
